One unforgettable experience from my childhood is how my mother would whip indiscipline out of any of her children when ourĀ behaviourĀ called for it. Ā Our entire yard was a Pan African forest! Typical of an average Malawian residential property, there were plenty of healthy tree branches at her disposal. Ā Her favourite, however, was undoubtedly theĀ mulberry tree branch that had found its roots in our front yard.Ā And boy did she drive the āI do not tolerate thatĀ behaviourā message home every time with those thin branches.
For the most part, I was raised with my older brother (my older sisters Ā attended Ā their high school and university education as boarders which meant I only got to see them during holidays).Ā And although I was generally a very quiet and reserved child š , I spent most of my spare time following my older brother around; I even climbed the trees he climbed( YES!! becauseā¦
