One unforgettable experience from my childhood is how my mother would whip indiscipline out of any of her children when our behaviour called for it.  Our entire yard was a Pan African forest! Typical of an average Malawian residential property, there were plenty of healthy tree branches at her disposal.  Her favourite, however, was undoubtedly the mulberry tree branch that had found its roots in our front yard. And boy did she drive the “I do not tolerate that behaviour” message home every time with those thin branches.
